The Town of Sunderland is located in the Pioneer Valley on the southermost edge of Franklin County. Sunderland is an agricultural town and is home to many tobacco and produce farms and maple sugaring businesses.

Sunderland is home to Mount Toby State Forest, a favorite hiking, biking and trail-riding spot. Main Street, is home to many notable historic homes, maple trees, wide lawns, and the 350 years old "Buttonball Tree".
